France - Chauvigny to Paris

The Arc de Triomphe was originally meant to be on the site of the Bastille, east of Paris, but this site proved more suitable. The architects took their inspiration from the Arch of Titus in Rome. Brass plaques are embedded in the paving in memorial of major national events eg the return of Napoleon's ashes in 1840.
